It was near Hill ‘n Dale close to 75 we were driving looking at nothing but I suppose Dad had seen the sign for U-Pik oranges and wanted to see what it was about. So we go down the dirt road and come to a huge grove. The man who owns the grove is talking about all of the types of oranges, grapefruits, pumello’s, tangerines, tangelo’s how he was trying to graft and cross polinate...

Hot in Florida according to Dad was “Hotter then a three peckered billy goat” , watching Dad kill a six foot rattlesnake in the back yard and being afraid and wondering how he could pull this off without being afraid.

Lesson’s learned going up to the wood pile and learning how to split wood with an axe, a sledge hammer and a wood splitting chisel, watching the wood pile grow as the wood was split and stacked. “Tighten up young man” meant work a little bit harder.

Going to Vic Shirley’s house in 1982 fishing in Weeki Wachee river and catching huge sea trout 4 of them and listening to the fishing stories from Dad, Vic Shirley and his wife. Dad worked with Vic Shirley at Crystal River power plant I think. Dad would always like to work “Cane to Cane” sun up to sun down another John Holloway saying that will live forever.

You know that what you become is all of what has happened to you throughout your life and you cannot change that but what impact did certain people have on your life family friends etc, as I sit here contemplating the impact that my father has had on my life it makes me wonder how much of who I am is because of who he is and was
